Some facts about Windows Phone 7 platform development

  • Microsoft has a brand new Windows Mobile/Phone Team
  • Microsoft has totally rebooted it's strategy for a Mobile market
  • Microsoft is laying its bet on Silverlight
  • Microsoft's Windows phone 7 was launched at the Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona


Input

  • Finger-based touchscreen input
  • Keyboard is optional (not a requirement for hardware manufactures)
  • Hardware buttons: Start, Back, Search


User Interface

  • Windows Phone 7 will implement a new "Zune-like" interface codenamed "Metro" that will include Hubs, Tiles, sliders etc. You can download a PDF file with additional information about Metro here.
  • Supported resolutions are 800x480(WVGA) and 480x320(HVGA)


Functionality

  • Native Silverlight support. (based on Silverlight 3)
  • Search integration. Many application will support
  • Windows Phone 7 will have a true Multi-touch support. Multi-touch will also be a hardware requirement for Windows Phone 7 devices.
  • Xbox Live integration
  • Zune Player integration (should act as a Zune HD)
  • Integration with social networks like Facebook
  • Customizable Start Screen shortcuts and "live tiles" feature(pictures are change on the fly)
  • Applications created for previous versions of Windows Mobile will not be supported
  • Improved browsing (Internet Explorer) with multi-touch support (you can zoom in and zoom out the text now)
  • Bing and Bing Maps are built into the phone as the default search and maps services
  • Improved Microsoft Office Mobile
  • One Marketplace for Windows Phone 7
  • Multitasking will be supported in special way(storing application state, resuming and Push Notifications)
  • No copy-paste support. Instead Microsoft introduced Context Clues
  • Data-detection service built into the text-handling API
  • XNA support (mostly used for game development)
  • Flash support ("Adobe and Microsoft are working together to bring Flash Player 10.1 to Internet Explorer Mobile on Windows Phone 7 Series.
    The newest version of Windows Phone won't support Flash at initial availability")
  • GPS will probably be a hardware requirement also.

  • Touch Screen (4 or more contact points)
  • Sensors (A-GPS, Accelerometer, Compass, Light)
  • Camera (5mpx or more, flash)
  • Memory (256Mb RAM or more)
  • GPU (DirectX9 Acceleration)
  • CPU(ARMv7 or greater)
  • Hardware buttons: Start, Back, Search
  • Probably WiFi and FM Radio
